Vacuum Pump Requirements in Chemical Industry

In many chemical companies, vacuum equipment is an indispensable public facility like water, electricity and compressed air. Vacuum is usually used to remove air or water vapor to prevent interference to the process. Vacuum can also improve the efficiency of the reaction process and the recovery rate of important compounds.

In the vacuum state, the boiling point of the liquid decreases, which is very beneficial for processing heat-sensitive materials. Under the vacuum condition, the solid end products produced from the liquid state are more uniform, and there are almost no cavities caused by bubbles.

In addition, it is safer to handle and transfer aggressive compounds under vacuum condition.

  1. Various methods of obtaining vacuum

Vacuum is produced by vacuum pumps. There are many types of vacuum pumps. In order to obtain low pressure and high pumping speed, multi-stage vacuum pumps can be connected in series and parallel to form a vacuum system. But all vacuum systems include a primary vacuum pump.

According to the different pumping methods, the primary vacuum pump is classified as follows:

  • Mechanically intercept the gas and transport the sucked gas from the suction port to the exhaust port, such as a variable volume vacuum pump.

  • Transfer momentum through a jet and take away the pumped gas, such as water vapor jet pump and atmospheric ejector.

  • On the unfolded surface, use a porous medium at low temperature to absorb gas, such as an adsorption pump.

 

The first two types of vacuum pumps are widely used in chemical industry, but water vapor jet pumps are rarely used now due to high energy consumption and strong pollution.

The adsorption pump stores the pumped gas in the pump and cannot directly discharge to the atmosphere, so it is not suitable for industrial applications.

As the application of vacuum in the chemical industry continues to increase, it is more appropriate to adopt a compound vacuum system, that is, a vacuum system formed by a series of multi-stage vacuum pumps.

Due to the harsh working conditions of the chemical process and the long working period, the vacuum pump must first be reliable, durable, and stable. At the same time, it must also have the following characteristics:

  • It can handle the vapor of various solvents without causing damage to the pump

  • It will not cause pollution to the process and the environment

  • The waste generated should be reduced as much as possible

  • The vacuum pump must be corrosion resistant

  • Able to handle flammable gas or steam

  • Able to suck liquid without damaging the pump
